View Larger MapThis wiki is a class project for students in The Everyday History of Modern America
(Spring, 2010 @ Southern Wesleyan University in Central, SC). This class covers the events, trends, and fads that influenced the daily life of Americans from 1900 to the present. Topics range from Beatlemania to political assassinations to Chernobyl to Dolly the sheep. Students receive a working knowledge of everyday American history and become more culturally literate and aware in the process.
Since we covered the everyday history of the United States as a whole, I thought a good project would be for the students to do the same type of coverage for the Upstate of South Carolina. This website is the result. Students were supposed to find at least four articles from each of their assigned years and either summarize the contents or type in the full article (sources were to be cited in both cases). Some newspapers were available on-line, so several of the students linked to the original articles. As with any school project, some students put forth more effort than others.
Below (and in the left-hand column) you will find links to 5-year periods from 1900 to 2000; these pages will highlight the events, some important and some normal, that influenced the daily life of those in the Upstate of South Carolina. The First 20 years 1900 - 1905 1906 - 1910 1911 - 1915 1916 - 1920
